Partners in the Horn of Africa - Projects for 2010

Partners in the Horn of Africa will take on approximately 25 new projects in Ethiopia
this year. The projects include,

Mt. Adama Reforestation
Last year Partners and villagers from the village of Dinsir Metakir planted 66,000
seedlings to reforest a devastated mountain slope. People who have been on food
relief for years are now working on this project. This year we will greatly expand the
project planting several hundred thousand new seedlings.

Footbridge across the Upper Nile
The Blue Nile isolates thousands of people every year after the rains when it cannot
be forded. Partners is now building a bridge which will serve more than 200,000
people who are stranded for up to 6 months each year! Last year 38 persons were
swept away trying to cross the river. The new bridge will allow people to cross
safely and to access markets, health care and education year round.

Washable Reusable Sanitary Pads
This Project now employs 10 women full time. 40,000 pads and modified panties
will be distributed to 5,000 rural school girls each year. The biggest challenge is
keeping up with the demand for a product that is taken for granted in most parts of
the world.

Scholarship House, “Laura’s Home”
This rented home with its full time housemother will provide rural orphan girls with
food, clothing, tuition and a safe place to live while they get a post secondary
education. The home commemorates the life of Laura Parkinson, a Vancouver
lawyer, feminist and active supporter of Partners.

New Libraries/New Schools/Water Facilities
5 new 4-classroom blocks and 8 new libraries will be built at elementary schools in
rural areas. And 10 new water wells for those rural communities will free up girls
from the drudgery of water collection and improve school attendance.

Ethiopia is a diverse and world-class stage for natural beauty and wildlife viewing, although the tourism industry is poorly developed. There are over 845 species of birds and 260 species of mammals, of which 50 are indigenous only to Ethiopia. Important areas of interest are Blue Nile Falls, Tana Lake (largest in Ethiopia), Simiem Mountains (3rd highest in Africa), Rift Valley lakes and the Sof Omar Caves in the south province.
