Partners in the Horn of Africa is an Enderby-based charity that works in Ethiopia. One of Partners' main focus is the plight of marginalized women in a country where the average per capita wage is $125.00 per year. All proceeds from A Great BIG Run For Africa go to provide micro loans to marginalized women in Ethiopia. The Run was conceived as a way for Canadians to reach out to Ethiopian women. A $70 loan will permit an Ethiopian woman to start her own business. Those loans have a wonderful track record in developing countries. Impoverished women can dramatically improve the living standards of their families if they are allowed to start their own small businesses.

History of A Great BIG Run for Africa

In 2004, Alison Moscrop travelled to Ethiopia to visit first hand the projects that Partners in the Horn of Africa were doing to end extreme poverty. One day, awoken in the early morning by the sound of hundreds of people running along the streets of the capital city in Addis Ababa, Alison learned that many people in the country participate in races barefoot or in whatever shoes they own just for the love of running. Upon her return to Canada, Alison wanted to do a fundraiser that incorporated running to support Partner's projects.

In 2005, A Great BIG Run for Africa was born when Stephanie Moore and Crystal Flaman, both friends of Alison suggested they run 100km to raise awareness and funds for Partners in the Horn of Africa's micro-financing program.

Today, A Great Big Run for Africa has two relay runs - a 100km run from West Kelowna to Enderby and a 50 km run from Mabel Lake to Enderby via Grindrod.  The money raised has enabled thousands of women to create better lives for themselves and their families through the creation of their own small business with training and a micro-financing loan.

Donations will be provided to Partners to utilize in projects where they need the funds the most, unless specified by the donor.

Join us and let's help end extreme poverty together or pledge your support! Just $70.00 will enable one woman to start her own business!

Ethiopia is a diverse and world-class stage for natural beauty and wildlife viewing, although the tourism industry is poorly developed. There are over 845 species of birds and 260 species of mammals, of which 50 are indigenous only to Ethiopia. Important areas of interest are Blue Nile Falls, Tana Lake (largest in Ethiopia), Simiem Mountains (3rd highest in Africa), Rift Valley lakes and the Sof Omar Caves in the south province.
