John Baigent
Executive Director of Partners in the Horn of Africa

John's interest in Africa goes back to the early 1960's when he was a volunteer with CUSO in Ghana. In 1988, while a partner in the Vancouver law firm, Baigent, Jackson, Blair, he took a sabbatical to work in Ethiopia for the World University Service of Canada (WLJSC). It was during this period that John fell in love with the country and its people and started to consider how he could establish a long-term commitment to the area. This resulted in Partners In The Horn Of Africa starting up in 2002. John works full time for Partners spending about half of the year in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is a diverse and world-class stage for natural beauty and wildlife viewing, although the tourism industry is poorly developed. There are over 845 species of birds and 260 species of mammals, of which 50 are indigenous only to Ethiopia. Important areas of interest are Blue Nile Falls, Tana Lake (largest in Ethiopia), Simiem Mountains (3rd highest in Africa), Rift Valley lakes and the Sof Omar Caves in the south province.
